And yet, there is a big push to include more non-fiction texts in all of our classes, be they grade 1 or grade 12.
Tom Newkirk, who wrote "How we really comprehend non-fiction" is adamant that we don't have to give up the joy of a good story when we read non-fiction, that "narrative is the structure of all good writing" including non-fiction texts. Well, that is what we are here to prove.
A little bit of context:
Cathy Mere of Reflect and Refine and Mandy Robek of Enjoy and Embrace Learning have hosted an online picture book event for the past three years. Educators and librarians post their favourite 10 picture books on August 10th--This amazing event not only builds community, but it has produced three incredible picture book resources.
Well, we figured what's good for fiction picture books outta be good for non-fiction picture books.
So, Cathy, Mandy and I are hosting the first (of many we hope) non-fiction picture book event:
- What: 10 nonfiction books you can't live without
- Hashtag: #nf10for10
- Who: Anyone interested --- educators, media specialists, librarians, parents, etc.
- When: Tuesday, February 19th
- Where: All posts will need to be linked here at Reflect and Refine on February 19th.
Hope you join us in this celebration of non-fiction texts!
(Here is a teaser for you....possibly one of the books that might make the cut.)
